These terms are the deal between you and Macabre Media when you use the Mapparition app or this website. By using either one, you agree to them. If you don’t agree, please don’t use Mapparition.
Who can use Mapparition
You need to be at least 13 years old. If you’re under 18, get a parent or guardian’s okay first. Keep your sign-in details to yourself, and give accurate information when you sign up. One account per person.
Go safely, and go legally
This is the big one. Mapparition points you toward haunted houses, ruins, abandoned buildings, lighthouses, cliffs, back roads and trails. Many of them are dangerous, closed at certain hours, or on private property.
- A pin on the map is not permission to go there. Follow posted signs, hours and local laws. Never trespass.
- Don’t damage, move or take anything, and leave graves, ruins and wildlife undisturbed.
- Check the tide, the weather and your route before you head out. Offshore lights and remote spots can be hard to reach and hard to leave.
- Never use the app while driving.
- You are responsible for your own safety and for following the law wherever you go.
Legends are legends
Mapparition shares ghost stories, folklore and reported sightings. We don’t claim that any haunting or creature is real. Place details, hours and locations come from public sources and our own research, and they can be wrong, out of date or approximate. Check before you rely on them.
What you post
You own what you post. By posting, you give us permission to store it and show it in Mapparition so other people can see it. Please don’t post:
- anything hateful, harassing, threatening or sexual;
- anything illegal, or anything that encourages trespassing or vandalism;
- the private address or details of someone’s home, or private information about anyone;
- videos or photos you don’t have the right to share;
- spam or ads.
We can remove posts and suspend or close accounts that break these rules. You can report posts and block people from inside the app.
Verified badges
Verified badges are given out by hand, at our discretion. The credentials shown on a verified profile are written by that person; a badge means we reviewed the application, not that we endorse the person or their claims. We can remove a badge at any time.
Points and ranks
Points, ranks, collections and medals are just for fun. They have no cash value and can’t be sold or traded. Faking your location or gaming check-ins can get your points reset or your account closed.
Other people’s content and services
Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors. Place photos come from Wikimedia Commons and are used under their own licenses, with credit shown in the app. Some place information comes from the National Register of Historic Places and the National Park Service. Maps are provided by Apple and Google, and videos by YouTube; their own terms apply when you use them.
If you downloaded the app from Apple’s App Store, Apple’s standard license terms for apps also apply, and Apple isn’t responsible for the app or its content.
Our app
We give you a personal, non-transferable right to use Mapparition. Please don’t copy, scrape or resell its content, try to break into it, or reverse engineer it.
No guarantees
Mapparition is provided “as is.” We work hard to keep it running and accurate, but we can’t promise it will always be available, error-free or correct.
Limits on our responsibility
To the fullest extent the law allows, Macabre Media isn’t responsible for injuries, property damage, fines or other losses that come from visiting places listed in Mapparition, from things other users post, or from relying on information in the app. If we are found responsible for something, our total responsibility is limited to $50.
Ending things
You can stop using Mapparition and delete your account at any time (Me tab → Delete my account). We can suspend or close accounts that break these terms.
Changes
We may update these terms. If we do, we’ll change the date at the top, and for big changes we’ll let you know in the app. Using Mapparition after a change means you accept the new terms.
The law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Maine, USA.
